Theatre work: A founder member of Red Ladder Theatre, Steve wrote and co-wrote Nerves of Steel (dir: Chris Rawlence); Taking Our Time (dir: Michael Attenborough) and Ladders to the Moon (dir: Annie Castledine).

He wrote Marie for Elizabeth Mansfield, and adapted it for BBC Radio 4. Marie ran at the West End’s Fortune Theatre, where Elizabeth was nominated for an Olivier Award. He adapted his music theatre piece Hymn to Love for BBC Radio 3. He translated Brecht's The Mother, directed by Annie Castledine. He wrote A Cloud in Trousers about the Futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, co-produced by Ensemble and York Theatre Royal. Steve wrote a new translation of Ay Carmela! by the Spanish writer Jose Sanchis Sinisterra and translated Schumann’s ‘Frauern-Liebe und Leben’ song cycle for Clara’s Gift, an Ensemble production. Most recently he wrote The Restoration of Nell Gwyn, also for Ensemble.

Screen and television work: Steve scripted the Channel 4 feature film T Dan Smith with Amber films and the drama series Bombay Blue for Channel 4. He’s written many popular TV series including The Knock, Wycliffe, The Bill and the BBC series Between the Lines (Writers’ Guild Award) as well as several episodes of Midsomer Murders.
