Chris trained under the Repertory Theatre Trainee Director Scheme at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.
He was Artistic Director of Manchester’s Library Theatre Company from 1987 to 2014, where his productions of The Merchant of Venice, The Life of Galileo, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, and Waiting for Godot all won Best Production in the Manchester Theatre Awards, he himself winning the Special Achievement Award in 2014.
Prior to Manchester, Chris was Artistic Director at Derby Playhouse and the Gateway Theatre, Chester, as well as the first director of the Studio Theatre at Birmingham Rep. Amongst his other productions are the premieres of Anthony Minghella’s Love Bites, Stephen Bill’s Over the Bar; David Edgar’s O Fair Jerusalem and Death Story.
Chris now freelances, and his recent productions include Spring and Port Wine and Pygmalion for Oldham Coliseum, Equivalent for JB Shorts, The Man of Mode for Manchester School of Theatre, and Edward and Eliza and the Smashing of the Van for Straightforward Theatre.
Chris has been an Accreditation Panel Chair for the National Council for Drama Training and Drama UK, and is currently an External Subject Adviser for the Performance Preparation Academy. He also chairs the Drama Centre Advisory Council.
