La’al Big Band: In the Mood
Sat 21 Oct | 7.30pmWest Cumbria’s own La’al Big Band presents an evening of swing, jazz and pop, from classics to contemporary arrangements.
Featuring both male and female vocals as well as popular instrumentals, this 19-piece ensemble provides music from the golden age of the big bands right up to modern-day numbers arranged in a swing and jazz style.
Expect to be entertained with favourites from the libraries of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and more. Perhaps more surprising is the selection of tunes from pop and rock stars that have been given the big band treatment….and really do work !
The La’al Big Band was formed in April 2011 by a group of like-minded musicians to provide West Cumbria and the Lake District with its own jazz and swing orchestra.
“La’al” (pronounced Lahl) is Cumbrian dialect for “little”, which might seem a misnomer for a 19-piece band. But where most of the band members come from, almost everything is preceded by a “la’al” This is a curiosity in itself, given that the region houses England’s highest mountain, its deepest lake and the World’s Biggest Liar, so not exactly little. The La’al Big Band is no exception !”
