A Great Day in Harlem (U)
This production ended on 28/02/2016
After the legend that was Ornette Coleman, A Great Day in Harlem documents the day when Art Kane, now deceased, coordinated a group photograph of all the top jazz musicians in NYC in the year 1958, for a piece in Esquire magazine. Just about every jazz musician of the time - including Quincy Jones, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins - showed up for the photoshoot which took place in front of a brownstone near the 125th Street station.
This documentary compiles interviews from many of the musicians in the photograph talking about the day of the photograph and shows film footage taken that day.
