The origin of Haydn’s choral masterpiece can be traced to a visit Haydn made to England in April 1785. Its inspiration was performances of Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt. It tells the Creation story as related in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost (1667). All human experience is laid out. A description of Chaos, the appearance of Light, of newly created creatures on land, sea and air and finally, the story of Adam and Eve. A tremendously enjoyable musical treat, The Creation has now been a favourite with English audiences for over 200 years.
