The Rite of Spring
This production ended on 08/05/2019
The wonderful Phoenix Dance are back following their sell-out, standing ovation-inducing performance last year. This year they’re mounting a bold, culturally distinctive modern reworking of the iconic ballet, The Rite of Spring.
Haitian choreographer Jeanguy Saintus re-envisions the near riot-causing original by Vaslav Nijinsky, introducing the sacred arts of Haiti, alongside contemporary global issues. In a programme change, Phoenix will also perform Left Unseen. This piece explores inclusion and isolation and our instinctive reliance on the five senses. Using precise choreography, moments of unison, interaction, sporadic bursts of movement and sudden stillness, Lebrun poses the question, how sensitive and aware can we become when we lose one of our senses…?
There is a post-show discussion with the dancers following the performance; this is a free event but you must book a ticket with the Box Office. Please call 017687 74411 to book a place (unfortunately this is not bookable online).
Running time of show:
Left Unseen: 25 minutes
Interval: 20 minutes
The Rite of Spring: 32 minutes
