Play Reading Club – P’yongyang

Pyongyang by In-Sook Chappell Thu 25 Feb | 6-8pm

Love discussing plays? Want to connect with like-minded people? We’re delighted to announce our February Play Reading Club.

Each month we read a play and meet as a group (online, via the zoom platform) to discuss it. The club is facilitated by our Artistic Director Liz Stevenson and local playwright Karen Featherstone, and there will be a guest appearance from the playwright whose play we are discussing at each session.  You don’t need to have come to any previous sessions to start now – we love newbies.

This month the play is P’yongyang by In-Sook Chappell.

Crossing military borders and class divides, Pyongyang tells the epic love story of two North Korean childhood sweethearts spanning three decades. Chi-Soo and Eun-Mi dare to dream of a life together in Pyongyang, working for Kim Jong Ils film studios. But as those around them start to disappear and information from the outside world trickles in, the devoted Communists are forced to view their glorious homeland in a different light.

Written by award-winning, Korean-born playwright In-Sook Chappell – who was inspired by a childhood visit to the Demilitarized Zone at the height of the Cold War and by the experiences of North Korean refugees – P’yongyang is a striking new work that was shortlisted for the 2013 Bruntwood Prize Award.

If you’d like to come along to Play Reading Club, book a ticket now and then it’s up to you to buy the playtext and give it a good read. You need to read it before you come so you chat about it!

Top tip: purchase your ticket before purchasing the playtext!

If the event has sold out, we’d hate for you to have made a purchase you regret, therefore it’s always best to order after you’ve got your ticket here – unless you’d like to read it anyway!

Copies of P’yongyang cost £11.99 and can be ordered by calling Bookends on 017687 75277 between 10 and 2pm Mon-Fri. Alternatively you can email them. Bookends will deliver copies twice weekly  to your door (Keswick town addresses only) with no charge, or  a £1 charge for copies posted out.
