Artist Development

Theatre by the Lake is committed to supporting local artists from across the region, and we developed the Cumbrian Creatives Network to help us find, assist and celebrate local creative talent.

Whether you are a local aspiring theatre-maker at the beginning of your journey as an artist, or an experienced professional who grew up in the region, we want you to help us shape the future of TBTL.

So far we have supported artists to develop their ideas for our scratch night, Open Space, commissioned new writing from Cumbrian writers, offered platforming opportunities for local artists in connection with national companies such as English Touring Theatre, and met Cumbrian actors through our open auditions. We’ve also teamed up with various development networks across the country to offer training, networking and development opportunities for local directors and artists.

We regularly host opportunities for artists to come and discuss a project with us, ask for advice or just find out more about the Theatre, with our monthly Walk and Talks, and have a regular newsletter with a round up of local and national opportunities.

We have plenty more plans coming up. To receive information about future opportunities from Theatre by the Lake, plus useful resources from around the county, please sign up below.

Cumbrian Creatives meet up and ticket offer

Join us at TBTL to meet fellow artists and potential collaborators and see some cracking theatre!

Collaboration is at the heart of so many creative processes, but the past couple of years have made it harder than ever to find and get to know new people in the creative sector. If you’re feeling like you’re the only artist in Cumbria(!), are on the lookout for people to work with on a specific project, or just want to have a drink and a see some theatre with likeminded folk, please join the first Cumbrian Creatives post-pandemic meet up, hosted by members of TBTL’s artistic team.

So we can keep track of numbers (and order the right number of biscuits!), please email Claire Dunk on claire.dunk@theatrebythelake.com or by clicking the ‘Find out more’ button if you’d like to attend, including a sentence or two about you/your practice. Please also let us know if you have any access requirements.

If you’d like to make a day of it, there are a limited number of £10 tickets available for Swim at 2pm and Kes at 7:30pm – exclusively for those attending the meet up. Just let Claire know if you’d like to take up the offer for either (or both).

Date/Time: Tuesday 12 April 5.00 – 6:30pm

Location: Theatre by the Lake
