Theatre by the Lake has been bringing together Cumbrian communities for over 20 years. Based in the heart of the Lake District, Theatre by the Lake welcomes 100,000 people each year to our productions, education and outreach work, and artist development programmes.

The geography which attracts millions of tourists to Cumbria also brings very real challenges. Our community is rurally isolated, with many areas of high deprivation contrasting with pockets of wealth. The county is difficult to get around, with poor road and rail connections. Local people face loneliness, a lack of cultural engagement and a lack of investment, heightened by the recent pandemic. In the midst of this, we are a real focus for the local community.

Increasing access to the arts in Cumbria is key to what will make the county thrive.
