THEATRE BY THE LAKE WELCOMES DR SAM ALBERTI AS NEW CHAIR OF TRUSTEES
Theatre by the Lake (TBTL) has announced the appointment of Dr Sam Alberti as its new Chair of Trustees, following a competitive recruitment process. An experienced cultural leader with longstanding personal connections to the area, Sam brings a wealth of expertise to the role as the theatre looks to its next chapter.
Sam, who is currently Director of Collections at National Museums Scotland and Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Stirling, has held roles in museums and higher education in Yorkshire, Manchester, London and Edinburgh. With extensive senior leadership and non-executive experience across the cultural sector, Sam brings valuable expertise in leading and supporting cultural organisations.
Originally from the North East, Sam has strong ties to Cumbria, with his family having been based near Keswick since the 1990s. A lifelong supporter of the performing arts, he has followed TBTL’s development over the years.
Speaking about his appointment, Sam said:
“I’ve visited TBTL since its earliest days, so I’m delighted to be joining the Board as Chair. With my personal connections to Keswick and a lifelong passion for the performing arts, I’m excited by the opportunity to help shape the next chapter of this innovative organisation. I look forward to supporting the talented team in their inspiring work to ensure more people can experience excellent theatre in this remarkable setting.”
Sam joins TBTL at an important time for the organisation, as it looks to build on its reputation for producing excellent theatre in an extraordinary location, while developing its artistic vision, reaching new audiences and securing a sustainable future for theatre in Cumbria and beyond.
Liz Stevenson, Artistic Director, and Simon Stephens, Executive Director, who jointly lead TBTL as Co-Chief Executives, welcomed the appointment:
“Sam’s roots in youth theatre, his knowledge of the area and his extensive experience as a cultural leader make him a brilliant fit for Theatre by the Lake. We are excited to work with him on the next chapter of theatre in Cumbria.”
The appointment comes as TBTL is also seeking new Trustees to join its Board, offering an opportunity for people who share the theatre’s passion for making theatre in an extraordinary place to help shape its future.
Working closely with the Co-Chief Executives and management team, Trustees play a vital role in developing the theatre’s strategy, reaching new audiences, supporting creative talent and ensuring the organisation’s long-term financial and environmental sustainability.
With ambitious plans for the future, the theatre is looking for individuals who can bring fresh perspectives, experience and enthusiasm to its Board, helping the organisation continue to make a difference to the communities it serves.
Applications for new Trustees close on Monday 30 November 2026. Further information about the role and how to apply can be found here.
