First Look at Rehearsals for A Christmas Carol at Theatre by the Lake
We’re giving audiences a behind-the-scenes sneak peek as our talented cast of actor-musicians bring Dickens’ much-loved Christmas classic to life, with a host of colourful characters, original live music, playful puppetry, and a ghostly twist or two.
Captured beautifully by photographer Rich Lakos, these first rehearsal images offer a glimpse of the creativity, laughter and festive spirit filling the rehearsal room as the cast and creative team work together to create a Christmas adventure for the whole family.
From spirited singing and lively movement to the first appearances of some rather wonderful puppets, the magic is already beginning to take shape.
A Christmas Carol with a ghostly twist
It’s midnight on Christmas Eve, and a spooky choir and the spirits of Christmas are preparing to take Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey he’ll never forget.
In this vibrant new adaptation by Goblin, the makers of our acclaimed 2023 co-production The Lost Spells, Dickens’ timeless tale is reimagined with original songs, live music, puppetry and plenty of festive fun.
Our Scrooge is a hard-nosed Victorian businessman from Keswick who has made his fortune in the big city, but lost the Christmas spirit along the way. With a little help from some unexpected visitors, could he rediscover the joy of Christmas before it’s too late?

And there’s more! Filmmaker Greta Zabulyte has been capturing the cast in action, including a delightfully spooky musical moment featuring some beautiful harmonies, a little mischief and a wonderfully deadpan response from Scrooge himself.
Watch our rehearsal video below for a taste of the music, humour and ghostly goings-on awaiting audiences this Christmas.
